Foundation and Higher Tier — We Cover Both

Whether your child is sitting Foundation or Higher tier, our sessions are tailored to the topics and demands of their specific pathway. We support students across all major exam boards: AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR.

FOUNDATION

Aimed at grades 1-5, Foundation tier covers core maths concepts. We focus on building solid understanding in every topic area so students can approach each question with confidence.

HIGHER

Covering grades 4-9, Higher tier introduces more complex content, including advanced algebra and trigonometry. We support children to have the depth of understanding needed to strive to reach their target grade.

A Personalised Learning Plan for Every Student

Every child starts with a diagnostic assessment. From there, we build a personalised learning plan that targets their specific knowledge gaps, tracks their progress through regular baseline assessments and moves them steadily through their GCSE topics, right up to exam-style practice.

Specially Trained GCSE Maths Instructors

Our secondary maths instructors are specially trained to support your child in how to understand and excel in maths, no matter where they are in their maths journey. They are university and college students who support with patience and encouragement in a one-to-one setting. Parents tell us all the time how much they value and appreciate our instructors. They work hard to motivate, provide emotional support and celebrate student success each and every day.

FAQs about GCSE Maths Tutoring

  • What maths should my child know for GCSE?

GCSE maths covers a broad range of topics across two tiers.

Foundation tier (grades 1–5) includes number, ratio, algebra, geometry and statistics.

Higher tier (grades 4–9) builds on these and adds more complex content including advanced algebra, trigonometry and probability.

Both tiers are assessed by AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR. If you're unsure where your child stands across these topics, a diagnostic assessment is the clearest way to find out.

  • When should my child start preparing for GCSE maths?

The earlier, the better. Ideally, children start building their GCSE foundations in Year 9, before the formal two-year course begins.

That said, it's never too late; many families come to us in Year 10 or Year 11 and we tailor the pace and focus of sessions to wherever your child is and how much time they have before their exams.

  • How does GCSE maths tutoring work at Mathnasium?

We start with a diagnostic assessment to identify your child's knowledge gaps and build a personalised learning plan around them. Sessions focus on three things: building deep subject knowledge, developing reasoning and problem-solving skills and practising exam-style questions.

As exams approach, we introduce baseline assessments and timed exam practice with in-session feedback. Every step is tracked so we can adjust the plan as your child progresses.

  • Where are your GCSE maths tutors located?

Mathnasium has 40 centres located across the UK.

We also offer live online sessions through Mathnasium@home for families who prefer to learn from home. Find your nearest centre to speak with a local team.

  • Why do you require an assessment for enrolment?

Every child arrives at GCSE with a different set of strengths and knowledge gaps. Without an assessment, we'd be guessing and guessing wastes your child's time.

The assessment lets us build a bespoke learning plan that targets exactly what your child needs, so every session counts.

  • What happens at the initial assessment?

The assessment is designed to feel nothing like a test. We start by getting to know your child during a short centre tour, a friendly chat about maths at school and a relaxed conversation about what they find straightforward and what they find tricky.

We then use a mix of verbal and written questions to build a clear picture of their strengths and the gaps we need to address.

Afterwards, we walk you through the findings and explain how we'd approach your child's learning plan.

  • How often should my child attend Mathnasium?

Most GCSE students attend two sessions per week. This gives enough time between sessions to consolidate what's been covered while maintaining consistent momentum.

If exams are approaching, we may recommend increasing frequency. Your centre director will discuss the right schedule for your child when you enrol.

  • Will I receive feedback on my child's progress?

Yes. After the initial assessment, we walk you through your child's results and outline the learning plan.

From there, we keep you updated regularly, sharing progress against goals, flagging any areas that need extra attention and adjusting the plan as your child develops. You're never left wondering how things are going.

  • How much does GCSE maths tutoring cost at Mathnasium?

Mathnasium operates on a flat monthly membership fee, which covers all sessions that month.

Fees vary by centre, so we recommend contacting your local centre for specific details. The first step, the diagnostic assessment, is free.

  • How can I enrol my child for GCSE maths tutoring at Mathnasium?

Find your nearest centre using our centre finder, get in touch with the local team and book a free diagnostic assessment. From there, we'll build your child's personalised learning plan and confirm a session schedule that works for your family.
