Mathnasium's 5 Ways of Learning

Here at Mathnasium, we help student’s gain their confidence back in math through our “5 Ways of Learning’. This idea helps students find their groove in math by teaching math in a way that makes sense to them. Let’s go over the 5 ways we teach, and see if this is what your student may need to get back on track this school year.

Our first stage is trying to get our students to use more mental math. This way of teaching helps each of our students solve problems in their head, without writing them down. Not only does this help them be more efficient when working through math problems, but it also helps them gain their confidence in their math abilities as they’re able to do more complex problems in their heads.

Our second stage is the use of verbal learning. In this stage, our instructors use a combination of direct teaching and socratic questioning in order for our students to think of a few ways to solve a problem. This idea helps our students broaden their knowledge of each topic they work on.

Our third stage is the use of visual learning. We have found that using visual cues helps break down each topic into real-life scenarios, making the topics more relatable to our students, further broadening their knowledge on the topic at hand.

Our fourth stage is the use of tactile learning. In this stage, we use props, or manipulatives, so that each student can actually work with what they’re calculating in their hand, making what they’re learning easier to understand.

Our final stage is written learning. In this stage, we use written numbers and math symbols to teach our students to solve efficient algorithms, process to build number sense and to solve problems more reliably and efficiently.
