At Mathnasium of Park City, we love celebrating with our community—and this year, we were thrilled to participate in our very first Park City 4th of July Parade! With red, white, & blue, and red, white, & black decorations, cars filled with flowers and favorite math skills, and students proudly wearing “I
Math” shirts, it was a picture-perfect celebration of “Math in Bloom” for this year’s hometown parade theme, Red, White & Bloom!
But did you know that behind the sparkle of every firework and the rhythm of every marching band lies some serious math? From angles and timing to symmetry and sequences, Independence Day is full of hidden math moments.
The Geometry of Fireworks
Fireworks burst into beautiful shapes—spheres, rings, hearts, and stars. These designs are carefully crafted using geometry. When an aerial shell explodes, pellets called “stars” shoot out in patterns based on how they’re arranged inside. A symmetrical pattern means equal spacing and matching angles—a perfect real-life application of rotational symmetry.
Want a challenge?
If 12 fireworks stars are arranged in a perfect circle, how many degrees apart is each one?
Answer: 360° ÷ 12 = 30° apart
The Timing of a Perfect Display
Firework shows are timed down to the second. Choreographers use math to sequence fireworks to music, calculating launch delays, speed, and height to match the beat. It’s like solving a giant timing equation—with sparkle.
A Quick Probability Puzzle:
If a grand finale has 100 fireworks and 60 are red, 25 are blue, and 15 are white, what’s the probability of a white firework being the next one to go off?
Answer: 15 out of 100, or 15%
Math is everywhere—even in the sky above us on the 4th of July! Whether you're measuring, predicting, or counting the seconds until the next big boom, math helps make the magic happen.
We hope you had a fun and festive Independence Day! And if your child’s summer goals include keeping those math skills strong, we’re here to help.
