I graduated from St. Olaf College in 2022 with my Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Mathematics, and Sociology/Anthropology.

What do you like most about learning?
I love the “aha” moment when you finally understand a tricky topic.
What is the biggest impact you’ve had on a student’s ability to become proficient in math?
I feel like making the center fun and inviting has allowed me to make a difference in every student who comes through the door. I was also a Mathnasium student when I was younger, so I can relate to the students who come into my center because I was in their shoes at one point. I went from hating math to majoring in it, teaching it, and now running a Math Learning Center. I am living proof that anyone can learn to love math!
What type of math do you enjoy teaching most?
I love fractions! Improper fractions, mixed numbers, converting between the two, and solving problems involving fractions!
How do you make learning math fun for students?
I build a rapport with every student I work with and make sure I’m explaining concepts in a way that makes sense to the student to avoid frustration. I know how good it feels to finally understand math concepts, so I let all of my students know that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Even if they’re struggling now, they all have the potential to be great mathematicians, and I don’t let them forget it!

I love it when two things I know well connect together to make something more than either of them by themselves.
What is the biggest impact you’ve had on a student’s ability to become proficient in math?
Three of my former students have gone on to work as instructors alongside me. Watching them grow is satisfying.

How do you make learning math fun for students?
I encourage myself and my students to think logically and creatively. Word problems are life!

Finding patterns and connections between two areas which seemed completely separate.
What is the biggest impact you’ve had on a student’s ability to become proficient in math?
I helped a middle school student advance an entire grade level of math over one summer. She went from being at grade level at the beginning of the summer to a grade ahead at the end of it!
What type of math do you enjoy teaching most?
High school math, specifically gemoetry.
How do you make learning math fun for students?
Playing games and showing weird math problems.

Learning helps open doors to new opportunities, provides new perspectives and helps make connections. I like the satisfaction and rewarding feeling that comes after solving a difficult problem.
What is the biggest impact you’ve had on a student’s ability to become proficient in math?
I helped a shy student come out of her shell which allowed her to open up to not just me, but the other instructors as well.

I incorporate games and fun, keep a positive attitude, and create relatable and memorable examples.

What do you like most about learning?
I like applying the things I learn and being able to recognize how it works into everyday life. I find it satisfying to use the knowledge I learn, especially when it comes to helping people!
What is the biggest impact you’ve had on a student’s ability to become proficient in math?
In my first few months of teaching, I was working with a student who was struggling with halving odd numbers. I tried multiple verbal teaching methods, and then I finally started using our manipulative tools and the student instantly had an "aha" moment. The manipulative tools solidified the concept for her, and she was able to solve the questions without them. Not only did the student learn, but I also discovered how powerful tactiles can be for learning math!
What type of math do you enjoy teaching most?
I really enjoy teaching division and reasoning in groups. We teach these concepts at many different levels and they appear frequently in other math topics.
How do you make learning math fun for students?
I like to incorporate math questions into conversations with students. I think it helps them see how applicable math can be, and that math can show up in many different ways.
Teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it. Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.
