Our staff is built to teach each student individually, to develop the skills they need to thrive in mathematics, and to foster a love of learning.

Oliver St. John

Lead Instructor

Oliver holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Business from Boston College. He has several years of experience teaching students K–12 across STEAM subjects and coaching extracurricular teams, including basketball and debate.

At Mathnasium, Oliver uses his dynamic teaching style to connect with students and grow their confidence in math. Outside the center, he enjoys writing about pop culture, exploring new foods, and going on long drives. His favorite number is 18, and he wore it proudly on his sports jerseys growing up.

JoAnn Mendl

Lead Instructor

JoAnn brings deep experience and enthusiasm to the classroom with certifications in Elementary, Middle School, and Special Education (K–12). She holds degrees from Trinity College and Teachers College, Columbia University.

JoAnn believes math is a lens for understanding the world, whether it’s measuring ingredients or launching rockets. She’s passionate about turning “aha!” moments into lasting success. Her favorite number is 8, a symbol of balance and infinity. When not teaching, she loves visiting national parks and planning her next adventure.

Emma Lothrop

Instructor

Emma graduated from Dickinson College with a double major in Physics and Environmental Science. As a teaching assistant at Dickinson, she loved helping students connect math to real-world concepts in science and engineering.

Emma also teaches martial arts to students of all ages, blending discipline with mentorship. At Mathnasium, she’s excited to help students develop confidence and mastery in math. In her free time, she enjoys painting, drawing, and being outdoors with her dog.

Edward Conte

Instructor

Edward is a graduate of Cornell University with a degree in Computer Graphics and Digital Media. He brings a strong background in analytical thinking and enjoys helping students connect math to design, technology, and everyday problem-solving.

At Mathnasium, Edward supports students with step-by-step guidance to deepen their understanding of key concepts. Outside of work, he enjoys bodybuilding and working in computer graphics. His favorite number is five, and the TV volume should always be a multiple of five!

Giovanni Cosenza

Instructor

Giovanni earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Rutgers University.  Having loved math for as long as he can remember, he is passionate about sharing that enthusiasm and helping others discover how enjoyable the subject can be. His favorite number is 1, which to him symbolizes striving to be the best version of yourself. Outside of mathematics, Giovanni enjoys exploring new restaurants and spending time with his dogs.

Anjali Jerath

Instructor

Anjali Jerath is a sophomore at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, majoring in Biomedical Engineering on the pre-med track! Outside of academics, Anjali stays engaged through several meaningful experiences—currently interning in an epidemiology lab at the Rutgers Cancer Institute and volunteer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.  In her free time, Anjali enjoys playing the piano, hiking, and spending time with family.

What Anjali enjoys most about working at Mathnasium is the opportunity to share her passion for math with students and help them discover the fun and excitement in learning—whether through engaging games, creative puzzles, or moments of breakthrough understanding!

Anna Goldgirsh

Instructor

Hugh O'Byrne

Instructor
Hugh studied Computer Science and Mathematics at University College Dublin, Ireland. His experience includes both classroom teaching and smaller setting tutoring, where he has developed a talent for helping students see the deeper connections within mathematics. Hugh understands that there are many perspectives from which mathematical ideas can be approached, and even if a student doesn’t immediately grasp their teacher’s explanation, they are often just one step away from finding the angle that makes everything click. Hugh enjoys guiding learners toward those “aha!” moments, where concepts suddenly fall neatly into place, and it’s this joy of discovery that fuels his passion for tutoring.

Hugh's favorite joke: Why did the mathematician say "the square root of negative one-sixty-fourth" after a really big meal?  It equals "I over eight".

Our Mathnasium Mission

Teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it. Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.
