Our staff is built to teach each student individually, to develop the skills they need to thrive in mathematics, and to foster a love of learning.

Mayra Ornelas

Center Director

Mayra graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology and brings a thoughtful, encouraging energy to her role as Center Director. She loves listening to music, cheering on the Dodgers, and spending quality time with family and friends.

At Mathnasium, Mayra’s favorite moments are when students grasp a difficult concept and light up with excitement. She believes math is for everyone—and she’s passionate about helping each student see their own potential.

Diego Hernandez

Assistant Center Director

Diego Hernandez graduated with an Associate in Business Administration and a certification in the CPA track program from Santa Monica College. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Accounting and Analytics at CSU East Bay as a fully online student. Mathematics has always had a special place in his life. After the Covid-19 quarantine, Diego returned to school with renewed motivation, determined to explore math as deeply as possible.

What began as a pursuit of quick, clever solutions grew into a deeper appreciation for the structure and elegance behind mathematical reasoning. As a previous instructor, Diego embraces the Mathnasium method, which emphasizes strong foundations, creativity, and ingenuity—principles he believes all students deserve. In the future, he hopes to pursue a Master’s in Pure Mathematics as a personal academic project.

Outside of academics, Diego enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, watching movies, working out, and playing Fortnite, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans.

Jonathan Johnson

Assistant Center Director

Jonathan, also known as Jon Jon, holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a minor in Mathematics from UCLA. He has taught calculus as a teaching associate at CSUN and has tutored college students in calculus, pre-calculus, and statistics. His academic interests span logic, set theory, and the philosophy of math and science.

At Mathnasium, Jonathan enjoys helping younger students engage with math in meaningful ways. When he's not teaching, he loves solving Rubik’s cubes and playing puzzle video games.

Dylan

Instructor

Dylan graduated from Santa Monica High School in 2023 and then Santa Monica College in 2025 and is currently attending UCLA as an Environmental Science Major. He loves math and science, especially ecology, and cares about helping his students love these subjects too. He believes math should feel useful and even enjoyable, not just a memorization slog. In his free time, he does mountain biking, surfing, theatre, and music.

Claudia

Instructor

Claudia is currently attending Santa Monica College. She plans to transfer and major in aerospace engineering. She enjoys math for its logical structure. Explaining concepts in different ways and adapting teaching strategies to suit individual students has also deepened her own understanding of mathematics. In her free time, she likes to go on hikes and study with friends in coffee shops.

Robert

Instructor
My name is Robert Hollman, and I’m passionate about helping students gain confidence in math. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Pure Mathematics from UC Riverside and my master’s degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Washington. For the past several years, I have worked with students of all grade levels, from elementary school through college, building not only their skills but also their appreciation for math.

In my tutoring, I focus on developing intuition and recognizing patterns. I believe math is not something to be feared but something to be understood, and I enjoy showing students how approachable it can be when broken down step by step.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy going on long walks and spending time with my two beagles. Math has always resonated with me because of the logical, structured way of thinking it encourages, and I love passing that perspective on to the students I work with.

Conrad

Instructor

Hello! I'm Conrad and I am one of the instructors that grant children a better understanding of math here. I was born in Berkeley and spent nearly my entire life living in the eastern Bay Area. Math has been my favorite School subject since preschool and I have excelled in every math class I've been in (Geometry was pretty tough though). I moved to Santa Monica with my family after I graduated from high school in 2024 and have been attending Santa Monica College ever since. My interests other than math include computer programming, modern history, economics and cats!

Joseph

Instructor

Hey I’m Joseph! I graduated from Berkeley with a BA in Russian Literature, but I’d study math if I could do it all again! I think math is beautiful like art or music. You can walk around a whole mathematical universe with only your mind. I find that fascinating. I am so convinced that math is fun that I made it my job at Mathnasium. Best choice ever. Beyond math, I like studying world religions, martial arts, and staring up at the night sky

Nathan

Instructor

Hi, my name is Nathan! I graduated with a BA in Communication and a minor in Digital Humanities from UCLA and am currently taking classes in Animation at Santa Monica College. At Mathnasium, I enjoy both the process of instructing students in problem-solving and walking them through the newest game of the month. I’ve also discovered ways that learning and teaching math can help me become a better artist. Outside of the center, I enjoy taking my bike out to the beach, watching movies, and exploring more of the city.

Our Mathnasium Mission

Teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it. Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.
