• Why do you require an assessment for enrollment at Mathnasium of Southeast Portland?

  Each student begins their Mathnasium journey with a diagnostic assessment that helps us identify their current strengths, learning gaps, and goals. These insights allow us to create a personalized learning plan that puts them on the path to long-term success in math.

• How do you teach math? What curriculum do you use?

  At Mathnasium of Southeast Portland, we don’t follow a one-size-fits-all curriculum. Instead, we use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach that blends structure with personalization. Each student receives a learning plan tailored to their specific skill level, learning style, and goals. 

  Our approach is designed to help students truly understand how math works—breaking down complex ideas into clear, manageable steps. This allows students to build a solid foundation for math mastery, improve problem-solving skills, and often transform how they think and feel about math.

• Do you work with advanced students or with students who are struggling with math?

  Yes! Mathnasium of Southeast Portland works with students at all skill levels—whether they are catching up, keeping up, or getting ahead. 

  Students who are struggling with math benefit from step-by-step instruction to build skills and confidence, while advanced students enjoy enrichment opportunities that expand their knowledge and challenge them in new ways.

• Do you work with homeschooled students in Portland?

  Yes! We support K–12 students from all educational backgrounds, including homeschooled, private, and public school students throughout Portland and surrounding neighborhoods.

• Do you help students with their math homework?

  Our schoolwork policy is individually tailored to each student, and the first step in determining this is through our free assessment. We pride ourselves in helping students find independent success in math by addressing the root cause of why schoolwork is an issue: weak fundamental skills. 

  If we find that a student has gaps in their knowledge, we make rebuilding these skills a priority. When a student's math foundations are strengthened to the point where they can grasp the concepts taught in their math class, only then do we allow students to work on schoolwork for a portion of their Mathnasium sessions. 

  If we provide help on schoolwork prematurely, it would create a sense of dependence, not independence, within a student. Nor would it help them find confidence in math. Not a winning strategy!

• Does Mathnasium assign homework to students?

  No. All learning takes place during sessions with our specially trained tutors. We do not assign homework, allowing students to focus on making real progress during their time with us.

• Do you prepare students for standardized tests?

  Yes! We help students prepare for standardized and school-based math tests, including state exams, ACT®, and SAT®. Our test prep combines personalized learning plans, targeted practice, and proven strategies to help students succeed.
